Faculty Concerts

Each year, the faculty of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) Musical Arts and Dance Week perform for the public in a concert presented by the Institute of Musical Traditions (IMT). This year, for the first time MAD Week and IMT will jpresent TWO Faculty Concerts for MAD Week 2016: the customary Wednesday evening concert and a new Kickoff Concert on Sunday evening.

MAD Week Celebrates The Music, Song & Dance of Ireland

Highlighted by the Irish dancing and tap dancing of National Heritage Fellow Kevin Doyle of Providence, RI, and the most recent National Heritage awardee, accordion virtuso Billy McComiskey, the concert will also feature a tribute in music and song to the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising that led directly to Ireland’s independence, hosted by Gearoid Ó hAllmhuráin. Billy will be joined by fiddling icon Brendan Mulvihill, along with dynamic young performers such as uilleann piper Joey Abarta, fiddler Dylan Foley and multi-instrumentalist Josh Dukes and sean nos (old style) dancers Jackie O’Riley and Shannon Dunne.

The midweek MAD Week concert will highlight the distinctive individual and regional styles of some of Ireland’s finest musicians, singers and dancers. Concertina player Gearoid Ó hAllmhuráin and fiddler Joan Hanrahan are stalwarts of Clare, Ireland’s most musical county. Cork singer, dancer and bodhran player Máirtin de Cógáin, singer, concertina player and dancer Brian Ó hAirt, Dundalk singer and flute player Nuala Kennedy. Paraic Hopkins and Seosamh Ó Neachtain dance the sean nos (old style) steps of Connemara, the remote western region of Galway. And Meath fiddler MacDara Ó Raghallaigh and Belfast flute player Desi Wilkinson.
