“The CCE Camp Week was an opportunity to experience traditional Irish music at its best. Under the guidance of enthusiastic masters, campers of all ages were challenged and nurtured. What grew from this effort was a mutual respect that broke through all barriers. No matter their background, no matter their age, each individual was offered the opportunity to step into this tradition, and to help it grow.” —Meg Ortel, CCE MAD Week Participant, 2009
Traditional Irish Class Lessons
Fiddle Classes
CCE MAD Week 2010 is pleased to feature the fiddling and class teaching of Kevin Burke, Brendan Mulvihill, Cleek Schrey, Robert Spates & Donna Long for the entire week. Fiddle classes are designed to accommodate beginning, intermediate and advanced fiddlers and violinists of all ages and levels of experience. The beginning fiddle class for CCE MAD Week is best suited for the student who has studied the violin or fiddle for 8 months to a year, not a complete beginner. If you have substantially completed Book I of the Suzuki method or can play well in the keys of A, D and G, have a good ear, sense of rhythm and tempo, then you are well-prepared for a great week! The intermediate class is designed for violinists or fiddlers with two to four years experience. The advanced class is for fiddlers with four or more years experience. Traditional Irish Flute Class CCE MAD Week Irish flute and whistle class is designed for intermediate to advanced flute and whistle players who have studied the instrument for two to three years and are familiar with traditional Irish performance styles. Students should bring whistles and wooden flutes, although silver flutes are acceptable. Classes will be taught traditionally—by ear—with phrases/sub-phrases demonstrated and repeated at slow and intermediate tempos. Recordings and transcriptions of all tunes will be provided by staff to help facilitate learning. Morning class will be led by Isaac Alderson; afternoon class will be led by Laura Byrne Egan. If you have questions, please contact Isaac Alderson or contact Laura Byrne Egan. Uilleann Pipes Class
CCE MAD Week Uilleann Pipe class is designed for intermediate to advanced pipers who have minimum of two years of experience with the instrument. All Ireland champion Isaac Alderson will lead this afternoon class each day. Recordings and transcriptions of all tunes will be provided by staff to facilitate learning. If you have questions, please contact Isaac Alderson. Daily 1:30 - 3:00 PM
Beginning Pennywhistle Class CCE MAD Week pennywhistle class is designed for students who are new to traditional Irish music. Registrants should come to class with a D whistle. A supply of D whistles will be made available for purchase at the class (please let us know if you’ll need to purchase one from us). Basic fingering and tone production will be explained and demonstrated. Tunes will be taught traditionally—by ear—with phrases/sub-phrases demonstrated and repeated at slow tempos. Recordings and transcriptions of all tunes will be provided by staff to help facilitate learning. This class will take place 10:00 - 11:30 AM each morning and is led by Laura Byrne Egan. If you have questions, please contact Laura Byrne Egan. Students may take beginning whistle as a half-day registrant, but all are encouraged to register for the whole day and learn about Irish set dancing (no additional cost for registrants under 18 years of age) in the afternoon class session. There are also a variety of fun and informative lunchtime elective classes that are offered between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day. DADGAD Guitar & Bauzouki Class CCE MAD Week guitar & bouzouki class is designed for guitarists and bouzouki players who are accomplished accompanists. Guitarists will learn chord progressions in DADGAD tuning, a popular alternative tuning among traditional Irish guitarists. It’s not too difficult to pick up, especially if the student is accomplished using standard tuning. Bouzouki will be taught in parallel. Chord and strumming patterns will be worked out antiphonally.
Classes will be taught traditionally—by ear. All students will be able to re-enforce what they learn in class by participating in morning and lunch hour sessions. Josh Dukes, All Ireland champion in guitar accompaniment in Tullamore last year, will be leading the class again. If you have questions, please contact Josh. Button Accordion Class Friday, July 9, 10-11:30 a.m. Tuition: Mid-day elective classes are included for all full or half day accordion registrations CCE MAD Week button accordion class is designed for intermediate and advanced students of the instrument. Students should have a working knowledge of the keyboard, basic scales, bass notes, chords, and arpeggios. Ornamentation and bass accompaniment options will be discussed and demonstrated, as well as alternate fingerings and styles of play. If you have questions, please contact Sean McComiskey by email.
Set dancing classes: Daily 1:30-3:00 PM CCE MAD Week sean-nos and set dancing classes are designed for those whose instrument is their body/feet! In order to better promote both dance styles to the next generation, all dance classes are free to all registrants under 18 years of age. Sean-nos (old-style) Irish dancing is a battering style stepdance, danced close to the floor with a loose upper body and playful musicality. Dancers learn to dance the tune, and are as much a part of the music as any percussionist. Sean-nos Irish dancing classes will be led by Shannon Dunne. For more information about Sean-nos classes, please contact Shannon Dunne. Group Set Dancing combines multi-person figures and footwork to create a fun social dance. Set dancing classes will be led by Marilyn Moore and Shannon Dunne. For more information about set dancing classes, please contact Marilyn Moore. Both of these true folk forms have been kept alive at ceilis, in kitchens, pubs, community centers, and street corners. No experience or special shoes necessary. If you wish to participate in dance classes at CCE MAD Week 2010, simply download and complete our standard registration form. Indicate your age where provided and check the box for dance classes. Lunchtime Electives
Ceili Band
Jesse started the ceili band program at Elkins, and continues to play for various ceilis with a number of bands in the local area. We’re lucky to have him with us this year to share his experience with the class and provide an overview of ceili protocols, dance types, tempo requirements for dance figures as well as sound balancing and working with sound systems. Daily, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Celtic Crafts & Beginning Pennywhistle
Karen also teaches pennywhistle and a lunchtime elective. Great fun for all. Really glad to have Karen back this year!
Bodhran—Irish Drumming We’re happy to report that Myron Bretholz will lead this ever-popular class again this year. Myron brings his performance expertise, teaching acumen, and his own unique fun-filled style to this always full (of laughter) class on Irish drumming. Bring your own drum or use one that House of Musical Traditions provides for you with the hope that you’ll buy it by the end of the week. You’ll learn beat patterns and accents for a variety of dance tunes. You’ll accompany tunes on CD as well as live musicians.
Irish Songs & Ballads – Singer’s Circle We’re fortunate to have Betsy O’Malley back again this year to lead a song circle for those ready, willing, and able to exercise and stretch their vocal chords with a few Irish ballads. Singing is a rich musical tradition in Ireland. It's a rare session in Ireland that doesn't feature a few good songs from local balladeers and talented singers. Share a song or learn another. You’ll be learning from one of the best in the area. A skillful singer and instrumentalist, Betsy is a CCE (Dublin) certified traditional music teacher. You’ll enjoy working with Betsy on your growing repertoire of traditional Irish songs and ballads. Daily 12:30 p.m – 1:30 p.m. Sean-Nos & Set Dancing
